Environmental archaeology aids our understanding, reconstruction and interpretation of past environments and economies by analysing soils, botanical and faunal remains and human osteology. These provide evidence for palaeoecology, diet, slaughter, butchery, agriculture and animal husbandry, trade patterns, refuse disposal, industrial and craft activities, demography and health.
