Archaeological Assessment - Bideford An archaeological assessment in advance of development is ongoing with the proposed site lying within a known area of archaeological interest due to its association with Bideford’s Culm Mining Industry, which may have originated during the Medieval period. The site is also of interest due to the palaeoenvironmental evidence of hedge banks within this area. Prehistoric enclosures, evidence of farming and habitation activity probably dating from the Bronze or Iron Age are recorded in the area with a small quantity of lithic material. The site is also of interest with Medieval enclosures and land use being identified as part of the Historic Landscape Characterisation Project. The development area lies on the outskirts of Bideford and forms an area of land use identified within Local and Structure Plans for B1, B2 and B3 industrial use. The site was initially identified, due to a previous archaeological assessment and geophysical survey being undertaken in advance of the construction of a link road in 1996. The site is also of interest as Prehistoric enclosures are recorded approximately 1km north west and south west of the site. Further Prehistoric and Romano-British activity lie outside this area, but within a known area of farming and settlement activity. Further work in advance of development is due to commence shortly. |
