Rob Butler BSc (Hons) MIoD MAHI FIBC MIFA
Managing Director

Archaeology and Heritage Management Consultancy was founded in 1999, by Managing Director Rob Butler after working at a senior level in contractual and curatorial archaeology within the public and private sector. His work is distinguished by his professionalism and commitment to archaeology, cultural heritage management and interpretation, which resulted in the establishment of three further areas of expertise; Historical Promotions and Event Management, Heritage Film Services and Heritage Education Service the same year.

Personal Profile

Rob, has worked on a wide range of projects at both county and national level in archaeology for nearly 30 year’s and has directed an extensive number of rural and urban archaeological excavations, evaluations and watching briefs. He has also worked extensively within curatorial heritage resource management in a consultation and management role since 1994. He has published a number of excavation reports, articles and papers on archaeology, heritage management, interpretation, education and historical re-enactment. As a curatorial archaeologist, he has been involved in development control and as a consultant, responsible for the formulation and management of archaeological policies in development (Local and Structure) plans, Thames and Blackwater Estuary Management Plan, Channel Tunnel Rail Link, several major road, quarry and historic urban core developments, and management of a number of nationally important Palaeolithic sites, in respect of development, within the Thames Estuary. He has consulted and provided advice on applications for development for local authorities and works to Scheduled Ancient Monuments, and has worked with English Heritage, The National Monuments Record (NMR) and Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS).

Since the formation of Archaeology and Heritage, he has acted as a consultant to a number of clients in the construction, land management and cultural heritage and tourism industries. He has wide experience in managing all heritage issues that are raised by the planning process, including site investigation, design of mitigation strategies for clients, and in negotiating with local and national agencies in respect of planning consents to agreed timetables. He has also conducted Conservation Management Plans and Conservation Appraisals to assist other project types within the sphere of the historic environment.

Rob, has participated in and presented seminars, conferences and organised exhibitions at both local, regional and national level for the National Trust, English Heritage, Environment Agency and DCMS.

He is a Member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists, Member of the Institute of Directors, Member of the Association for Heritage Interpretation and his expertise was recently acknowledged when he was appointed a Fellow of the Institute of Business Consulting.
